Alternative glyph

Hello, to get to the point. I’m testing the fonts and what not and made two different letter variations in adobe illustrator of the letter a. saved the font, and imported into my ipad so that its usable. when I write with my font on the ipad, the “a” alternative is not included in the word. if I type “variation” itll use the same 2 a’s and not one and then the other variation.

trying to find a solution and have looked around with no help, much appreciated.

Hey my friend. Unfortunately, unless something has been developed and I’ve missed it, this is just how fonts work. Alternative characters in a font are not swapped out automatically, it has to be done manually by the user.

How to go about doing that will vary depending on the software you’re using. For Adobe products you need to highlight the letter you want to change, open the ‘Glyphs’ panel and click on the alternate character you want to swap it out with.
Other software will have different methods of selecting and using alternate characters. There may be scripts for Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign that will randomly swap out alternates, but it’s not something that happens by default in any software that I know of. Hope that helps.
