Published font not matching Illustrator files

I am working on a new font and I have drawn all the UC/LC glyphs, as strokes. Dragged them into the plugin and began the first pass at reviewing and found these discrepancies with some glyphs; the smooth curves have bumps on them or cut off entirely.

Does anyone know what might cause this issue?

Difficult to guess but feel free to send the source AI file to hello@fontself.com for inspection.

Hey bud, looking very cool…although that is a strange issue, and one I’ve not personally come across.

The only thing I can think of is that it’s a conflict with how fontself is reading in the strokes; it looks like it may not be registering or reading the stroke cap and corner settings correctly and rendering a confused mix of settings such as butt cap (the cut off top of the central stem), and miter limit (the point on the left shoulder). I’m really not sure though. The only thing I can suggest is to keep your current working file as a backup and save a duplicate, where you can outline or expand the strokes, reimport the glyphs to fontself and see if that helps solve the issue.

This has happened to me several times when working with strokes. I’ve just expanded them myself before dragging into Fontself and they are fine. Hope that helps!

Thanks everyone. I figured it might be solved by expanding the stroke, but I would like to keep them “whole” for future-proofing the files. I will do that in the near term, but hope Fontself can find a fix for this one.

The issue is related to how Illustrator outlines the stroke, and none of the tricks we know of managed to circumvent this AI bug

Stupid Adobe

OK, I solved this issue. The two strokes for the “w” were not connected; one had its corners round while the other had it set to square. I outlined the stroke and repeated the error.

So then I duplicated the glyph, connected the 2 strokes and then outlined the stroke with the same error - but that was because the corner in the path panel was set “square” - I guess Adobe defaulted to the left stroke’s square corner.

Undid the outline stroke, set the corner to round and re-outlined the stroke successfully.
